| Rise n' Shine Biotech, one of the leading tissue culture companies of India, has shown a tremendous growth in the last few years. "Since 2003, the company has shown tremendous growth in respect of quantity of tissue culture plants production and its sale in domestic as well as in international markets," says Bhagyashree Prasad Patil, MD of Pune-based Rise n' Shine in a conversation with Floriculture Today. "Currently, we produce about 16 million plants of horticulture, floriculture and ornamental origin. As compared to last year, the company has registered approximately 200% growth." She thinks there is a good opportunity for Indo-Dutch floriculture cooperation where the Dutch "should provide techno-commercial data of product and should also support the growers in this field." According to Patil, India has some natural advantages over European countries in floriculture, "We should make proper use of the climatic advantage that we have over Europe." But our weakness in post harvest technology restricts the Indian floriculture to come at large in the international front. "As far our experience is concerned, quality of flowers in greenhouses is at par with the European growers; but due to poor post harvest we lag behind them," adds Patil. Here, she further talks about possibilities of Indo-Dutch floriculture cooperation, her company's foreign collaboration projects, technology transfer from the Dutch firms, and strength & future plans of Rise n' Shine. Excerpts: |
Possibilities of Indo-Dutch floriculture cooperation.
India has a wide range of climatic conditions along with good technical people and that can be utilised to make planting material more cost- effective. Our tissue culture laboratories can produce wide range of bulbs in micro propagation way and that can be bulked in the fields of cold climate areas like Kashmir in economical way. Also there is good possibility to export mini bulbs to European countries. We are thinking of producing high-value plants and cutting, which is having very good market potential in developed countries.
On technology transfer from the Dutch companies.
Though Indian floriculture industry started getting shape from early nineties, there was huge ups and down due to improper selection of technology as well as varieties. But now floriculture industry is quite matured and serious players are now in business. Globally flower business is a game of volume to sustain. Major floriculture companies and breeders should conduct proper survey to explore International novelty considering our own condition and market demand. I think they should provide techno-commercial data of product and should also support the growers in this field. Again, we are weak in post harvest and value addition of product. Growers should be more educated and trained about post harvest activities. As far our experience is concerned, quality of flowers in greenhouses is at par with the European growers; but due to poor post harvest we lag behind them. Logistic is very important factor for flower industry. Internal facilities like roads and pre-cooling should be available at lower cost and also at airports, these products should be handled properly.
New generation is buying cut flowers more often and it is definitely a good sign for development of this industry. We should make proper use of the climatic advantage that we have over Europe. Regarding transfer of technology and variety transfer, the Dutch are very open and now they have realised that only long term association could be possible.
